Fourth of July 2012

We didn't do it last year but this year we made it to Boston's 4th of July fireworks. We drove partway in and parked the car at a train station and took the "T" in the rest of the way. We met up with Owen and Ana's Aunt Liza and her boyfriend, Vijay and we spent the evening with them walking around, took in a carousel ride, waded in a wading pool/fountain, ate dinner, enjoyed some bubble tea and all before claiming a spot right on the Charles River for a long wait before the show. We got a great spot with the fireworks barge about 1/4 mile away from us. There were so many boats packed into the river especially a lot of kayaks, inflatables and rowboats.

About 2 hours before the show, the sky started to flash off into the distance and at first I thought they were fireworks in other towns but no. It was lightning and that was pretty spectacular. For a long while and based on the cloud path, it looked like the storm wouldn't be directly overhead.
They announced they were going to delay the fireworks because of the storm and that meant an even longer wait, one that I wasn't particularly looking forward to. Ana was ready to go home but Owen was happily playing his DS. After a little while the lightning stopped and the boaters who were instructed to seek refuge under bridges now started to come back out. Thankfully the fireworks show started just a few minutes past its original start time but then just as the fireworks went up, the rain started to come down! And come down it did! A nice couple we sat in front of gave us their tablecloth to use as rain shelter and while we did get wet, we didn't get soaked, much thanks to them, whoever they are!
The fireworks were really good. I had to take my hearing aid off when it started to rain but not only could I hear a lot of the pops without my aid, I could hear Owen scream and laugh with delight! That alone was worth the long day, the long wait and getting wet! Ana enjoyed herself too and was glad that we waited. To get home we had to cross the bridge along with thousands and thousands of others and walk to the nearest "T" station, and pack ourselves like sardines onto the next train we could get on and head to where our car was parked. Long day but a good one. We didn't get home till after midnight and Ana slept in the clothes she wore that day. I hope you all had a Happy and memorable 4th!
