We had near record snowfall in Vancouver this winter. I think we were one inch short of breaking a 40 year old record - or something like that. Dealing with this kind of weather has been interesting. Had we been in New York or Vermont, it wouldn't even be that big of a deal, but here it was. Living on a mountain has it's challenges, especially if you don't have snow tires or chains on your car. Which we didn't have. Which resulted in a busted tire. Which ultimately led us to get new tires for the van that could withstand the snow. And, to make matters more challenging, Quebec, one of the provinces in Canada passed a law saying that all its motorists had to have snow tires on their cars or face a fine. So, after we skidded into a curb on ice and popped a hole in the tire big enough for me to put my hand completely through, and waiting almost 2 hours for roadside assistance, we found out that snow tires were sold out everywhere in British Columbia because Quebec snatched up most of the winter tires available for sale. Frustrating, yes, but the new tires we have are pretty darn good for all seasons and handled the driving much better than our old ones.
